Off and running
Off and running

After months of preparation and friendly games we finally kicked off our league campaign this past weekend with a game I can only describe as exhilarating and one, which left us short of breath.

We started off the game at a slow pace and allowed the opposition to dictate the pace of play and from the onset it became evident to me that we were going to have problems in defence.

This rang true as our defensive frailties and inefficiency at the back really cost us from taking home all three points and starting off the season on a winning note.

The first goal that SuperSport scored was a really soft one and we should have been more aware and attentive when defending a free kick so close to our goal, in the end the defence left Rowen with no cover and we had to pay the price as SuperSport scored.

With regards to SuperSport’s second goal I thought that the referee’s decision to award them a penalty was a harsh one and if you watch the replay’s on television then you will see what I mean, anyhow it is football and we have to live with the official decision.

Rowen guessed correctly from the resulting spot kick but was unfortunate not to have made the save and kept out Katza’s penalty, and we had to chase the game again.

At the back I felt we were not our usual disciplined selves SuperSport were able to attack us on a number of occasions straight down the middle and if it was not for some good goalkeeping and covering from players in other positions getting back quick enough we might have conceded one or two more goals.

While we did not have the best day at the back, I thought that in other parts of the field we were really potent particularly upfront as we attacked with venom.

It was nice to see that we made good use of our dead ball situations around the opposition penalty area one of which landed up in us getting the ball in the back of the net, David Obua and Siyabonga Nkosi must be congratulated for some quick thinking. Equally so the goal scorer David Mathebula should be congratulated as he reacted quickly to what was going on and caught SuperSport napping as we drew level.

Also Kaizer Junior did well too when he got to the end of a long ball from the right and did the job that he was sent on to the field for and that was to find us a goal, he showed good vision in tracking the ball and then thumping it into the back of the net.

Over all it was a decent display from us not one that we should read too much into but of course we need to improve on our failings from this first game of the season and make sure that by the time we play Benoni United in about two weeks we having worked on are problem areas.

Until then be well and keep up the support.
