With ‘Keeping in touch with favourite player’ taking a break this week, KaizerChiefs.com took time to speak to Kaizer Chiefs Player of the Year 2005/2006 Season, David Obua currently plying his trade for Hearts in Scotland. Obua, who donned the gold and black jersey with aplomb in his three-year stay at Chiefs, will remain in the hearts of many fans for his contribution in the success of the team.

‘King David’ thanks to you for taking time to talk to kaizerchiefs.com. How is life in Scotland?

David Obua: Life is good here I can’t complain. I just wish I had the whole Kaizer Chiefs crew here with me! (Laughs)

The people here, like in South Africa, are nice. The fans have been good although they expect a lot from us as players. Hearts have been doing well and we are now lying fourth on the log. I know that we can do even much better as a team. I am hopeful that we will finish the season stronger.

We are playing Hibs this coming weekend, which is one of the most anticipated games here as it is a derby. I will miss it though as I am still struggling a groin injury. I am confident that we will beat them and continue to climb the table.

Football must be different to what you were used to in South Africa. Is it what you expected?

David Obua:
I knew that football here would be more physical than it is in South Africa. I had to adapt to that although it took bit of time I am fine now. It was also colder but I am fine now.

You have also been keeping in touch with the development at Naturena…

David Obua:
(Cutting in) Yes I have for sure, I am Khosi 4 Life! I know for instance that Captain Chincha (Kaizer Motaung SR) has bought his 40% shares back from Primedia. He really loves his players and I have no doubt that with this move more positive are going to come to the Club. He has also surrounded himself with people who really love the Club.

The likes of Dara (Carroll), Abdulla (Mayet)…I am talking of the likes of Groundsman, Grivance (Malunda), Mingi (Motaung), Bobby “Quality” Motaung…all these guys are great and I am sure the Club will grow from strength to strength.

Who are you keeping in touch with at the Club?

David Obua:
I talk to Tso (Gerald Sibeko) and Kaizer (Motaung JR) whom I have not spoken to for a while now. I also talk to Valery Nahayo who is now wearing the jersey no. 13 that I used while at Chiefs.

I also keep in touch with Dennis Onyango and some of my compatriots plying their trade in the lower divisions in South Africa.

What stood out for you about the Club during the three years here?

David Obua:
Kaizer Chiefs is like a family, in fact it is a family! The guys there were just great. The likes of Spy (Amien Kaldine) and Shosho (Mcedisi Mackenzie) will go out of their way to make sure that you fine. The values of which the Club was built is something that stands out for me.

Which of the youngsters have impressed you since you left?

David Obua:
Itumeleng’s younger brother, Lucky. I think he has done well since he was promoted to the senior team. I know that he has not played lot of games yet but he is definitely a player for the future.

I have also been impressed by right-back, Tlou (Molekwane) who trained with us at some stage while I was still at the Club. Jimmy Tau is currently occupying the position now but that boy is definitely coming.

I also like the likes of Sandile Zuke, Sihle Mbambo who are no longer with the Club. I wish the all the best for the future.

The Soweto derby is next weekend at FNB Stadium…you must miss playing in front of thousands of fans at a stadium where you scored memorable goals…

David Obua:
Wow! I do not even know how to describe the feeling every time we faced Orlando Pirates in that stadium. I play a derby here in front of about 20 000 supporters and it is nothing compared to the Chiefs vs. Pirates derby. I still believe it is one of the best derbies in the world.

I always talk about it to my teammates. That is in South Africa when the two teams meet, no one gets robbed, even politicians take time to watch the two giants out muscling each other. It is such a massive event. I am sure the guy despite the cup game this weekend on the back of their minds is a Soweto derby next week. I am backing Chiefs to win this one for sure!

South Africa recently hosted the World Cup 2010. What are the people saying in Scotland about the event held in the African soil for the first time?

David Obua:
The Chairman of the LOC, Irvin Khoza, Danny Jordan and everyone needs to be congratulated for the job well done. I remember talking to my teammates here some of them did not even go to South Africa because of the reports about crime. I used to tell them that South Africa is a top class country and they should not worry about security…they seem to regret having missed the event now because nothing happened and the event was top class. I am sure the World Cup is going contribute a lot to the development of the game in South Africa. I am also confident that we also going to see a stronger Bafana Bafana in the next couple of years.

What does the future holds for you?

David Obua:
It is my dream to play in the English Premiership and hopefully something will happen in January. I am now focusing on recovering from this injury and get to play for the team…my representatives are busy organizing something for me!
