Kaizer Chiefs big game man David Obua read with amazement in Thursday morning’s newspapers at Chiefs Durban base where they are camping out ahead of Saturday’s ABSA Cup final against arch rivals Orlando Pirates.

The reason for the lanky Ugandan international's amazement was down to the fact that he found out that he was on the shortlist for two Premier Soccer League awards. Obua is in good company along with Sundowns players Surprise Moriri and Esrom Nyandoro, Bloemfontein Celtic hitman Siyabonga Nkosi are all in line for the PSL Player of the Season award.

The same quartet are joined by Orlando Pirates Zambian international Isaac Chansa as nominees for the PSL player’s player of the year award.

With the ABSA Cup final only days away, Obua the star of encounter when Chiefs beat Pirates twice during the PSL regular season - the tall man is keeping his head out of the clouds and keeping focus solely on Pirates. Obua says “to be nominated for these awards is really humbling and it is not David Obua who has been nominated - these nominations are for all my team mates and the supporters if I win then they are winners as well”.

As Obua stares out at the Indian Ocean the only thing on his mind at the moment are the Sea Robbers as he continues “right now I am not concerned about winning the awards. What is important is that with the help of my team mates I need to put in a big performance on Saturday. The important thing is not about me winning personal accolades - it is about the eventual success of the team which is what we will be working towards”.

The next couple of days are sure to be trying times for David Obua as he brings to an end his first full season in South African football and one that he certainly put his stamp on and gave Amakhosi faithful many things to cheer about. As David sets out to help Chiefs take care of Pirates on Saturday, we will be rooting for him when the PSL Awards take place at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg on the 23rd of May.
