“I’m one hundred percent recovered,” says Ramahlwe ‘Rama’ Mphahlele, when looking back on the knee injury he suffered in December 2018 that required surgery. “It was difficult to recover in terms of getting back to my usual tempo but I’m stronger and quicker now. I will also continue to put in the work at training.”
With the injury woes behind him and having now completed three matches on the trot, ‘Rama’ is raring to go to secure a first major trophy with Kaizer Chiefs as the focus shifts to the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal against Cape Town City.
“This is a season defining match for us so we will give it everything we have to ensure a place in the last four,” promises the right-back. “We know what the opponents are capable of. They will come and have a go at us, but we have been preparing well for this game.”
The two encounters against Benni McCarthy’s charges this season were a 4-1 win for Amakhosi in Cape Town, while the Citizens earned a 1-0 ‘smash and grab’ victory at FNB Stadium.
Mphahlele may now have fully shaken off his injury, but he also points out that injuries have contributed to Chiefs’ mixed fortunes on the field this season.
“As much as we are a team that doesn’t rely on individuals, there are some players we missed this season, who increase the chances of winning when they are on the field. The likes of Itu (Khune), Tight (Molangoane), Erick (Mathoho) and Lebo (Manyama) are so important to the team.”
‘Rama’, however, has faith in the players that are taking to the field currently and believes they will do the job in the tie against Cape Town City this weekend. “The other guys have stepped up and have done well in fighting for their positions. Now we have an opportunity to win a trophy.”
With the business end of the season now in full swing, Kaizer Chiefs will host Cape Town City in the quarterfinal of the Nedbank Cup at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday 31 March. Kick-off is set for 15:00.
Tickets for this match are sold at TicketPro (Spar supermarket, Edgars, CNA and JET) at R40 per ticket.
