Striker, Bernard Parker deflected the attention after scoring four goals against AmaZulu insisting that the ‘result was made possible by the unity and teamwork’ in the Chiefs side.
Bernard Parker who joined the Glamour Boys before the start of last season from FC Twente had a slow start to his Kaizer Chiefs career by his standards.
He was unstoppable on Saturday evening when he scored four goals as Chiefs ran riot to thrash AmaZulu by 6-0. The performance justified the confidence both the Management and Technical Team have on the players.
“I am part of a great team, against AmaZulu everyone did well and I think the team should take credit not Bernard Parker. We all played well and we are united. We are playing as a team and that is what we want to carry on doing this season,” he told kaizerchiefs.com on Monday morning.
Parker was in a perfect position to score in the 90th minute before deciding to lay the ball off to his teammate Siyabonga Nkosi to score the 6th goal of the match. If Parker had scored he would have broken the PSL record and become the first player to score five goals in one game in the PSL era.
“It’s about the team; there were couple of players in the box and instead of shooting I thought it was better for me to lay the ball for my teammate to score. We are all happy to start the season on a high note. “
“We need to keep on dishing the same performance week in week out. We need to forget quickly about this game and focus on the next game.”
Parker revealed that he ‘tried too much last season’; “I told myself during preseason that I need to focus more on my offensive play and to put myself in good positions to score. I like to think I tried too much at times last season and things did not work out for me. I would go back as far as our box to fetch the ball and by the time I get to attacking third I would be tired.”
“I was happy to score against AmaZulu but I cannot rest on my laurels now. I need to keep on improving and listening to the Technical Team. We have a long season ahead of us. We are receiving wonderful support from the fans and if we give 100% and fight for one another we can have a good season,” added Parker.
The Bafana Bafana striker who set the scene alight with his performances for Bafana Bafana during the Confederations Cup in 2009 is currently leading the goal scoring chats with four goals and his hattrick against AmaZulu was the first for the season 2012/2013.
