Captain, Itumeleng Khune told the members of the media at the press conference held at Vodaworld on Thursday afternoon that pride will be at stake when the Glamour Boys square up against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Regarded widely as one of the best goalkeepers in his generation and one of the best young keepers in the African continent, Khune (25) is expected to lead the Amakhosi on the field on Saturday.
“I share the responsibility to lead with all other senior players in the team. It is our duty to make sure that the younger players and those who will be playing for the first time in a game of this magnitude are settled quite early in the game,” said Khune who sat next to his Coach, Stuart Baxter.
“Pride is at stake,” continued Spider who played his first Soweto derby back in November 2007.
“The game against Platinum Stars was a wakeup call for us and we needed to bounce back against Ajax Cape Town. It was a very important win before the derby and we will be going to Saturday with our heads held high. That Pirates did not win against Chippa has no bearing on the outcome of the game on Saturday.
He told kaizerchiefs.com ; “It is always an honour playing in what is the biggest game in South African football calendar. This is a game with lots of history. It is a game that even when I was playing in the junior teams I looked forward to watching our heroes taking the field. We also know what this game means to the supporters."
“We are back in training on Thursday afternoon in preparation for the derby. We are all looking forward to the game. We are expecting a fierce game as everyone will want to come on top on the day."
“I am also looking forward to renewing my rivalry with Senzo Meyiwa; it all started in the Development and it will be interesting to see who comes on top."
We hope that the fans come in numbers as they have always done. Hopefully both teams can give the fans their money’s worth by displaying good football and good spirit,” added Khune.
