Quartey’s return boosts Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs technical and playing staff was all smiles on Monday this week following the arrival of Ghanaian born defender, Jonathan Quartey in Naturena following his overseas trials. This is definitely a boost for Amakhosi ahead of the clash against Red Devils in Cape Town’s Newlands this coming weekend. The two sides will be locking horns in what is seen as a mouth-watering clash in the opener of 2008 Vodacom Challenge edition.

Despite being unlucky with injuries, the Black Meteors defender was impressive at the back for Amakhosi in his median season with Amakhosi. “Jona” boosts the already solid Kaizer Chiefs defence which has been armored with the likes of Moketi Tsotetsi, joining a new signing from Jomo Cosmos Vallery Nahayo, former Mpumlanga Black Aces’s Thabang Rooi and the cool, calm and collected, Wayne Matle.

“It is good to be back at Naturena and see all my teammates. I am already looking forward to the season ahead. I was satisfied with the contribution I made to the team last season despite making few appearances. I like to believe that I did well whenever the technical staff gave me an opportunity to play. This season I am going to work harder and try to make more appearances” the no.35 tells kaizerchiefs.com

Jonathan says he welcomes the competition from his teammates, “Competition is good for the team. I like to think as a player I strive better when there is competition. I know Vallery (Nahayo) during his day at Cosmos. He is a solid defender. I have no doubt that he is going to add value in our fortunes this season. I have seen other guys; they are also looking good at training although I have not yet spoken to them. I do not concern myself a lot about competition what is important to me is that we are all working for one common goal, to be successful this season” he says.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Muhsin Ertugral who recommended that the Ghanaian international be signed ahead of last season says he is glad to see “Jona” back in Naturena.

“He is a quality defender and I am obviously excited to see him back here,” he says. Muhsin used the former Gold Field, 21-year star defender as the center back and sparingly in the middle of the park in the absence of Tinashe Nengomashe last season. His strength is playing from the back, superior distribution, neat tackling and never panics.
