South African ambassador and first citizen in Korea, Sydney Kubheka had dinner on Saturday with the Kaizer Chiefs entourage after meeting club chairman, Kaizer Motaung, officials and players at the Incheon airport, Seoul in Korea earlier in the day.
Speaking at the dinner, Kubheka said it gave him great pleasure to welcome the mighty Amakhosi to the beautiful dynamic country of Korea: "I welcome you all not only as a succesful club in African football but I welcome you all as ambassadors and representatives of a sports loving nation - South Africa.
"You are participating in the 2003 Peace Cup, a tournament of its first kind geared to raise funds for the needy and aiming at preaching peace around the world. That is a very noble commitment."
"...My understanding of this tournament is that it is in line with the foundation on which Kaizer Chiefs was formed in South Africa. I am pleased, therefore by Kaizer Chiefs' participation in the tournament and would like to take this opportunity also to welcome the two ambassadors of the SA
World Cup 2010 bid aspirations present here, bro Kaizer and Doctor - uMntungwa (Khumalo).
"To you Putco and Bobby I hope you will afford the embassy an opportunity to host the team on behalf of the South African government, to have the team welcomed in an appropriate way. Finally during your stay in Korea, please be assured of the embassy's highest consideration and assistance," said a visibly excited Kubheka.
Mr Kubheka said the Amakhosi entourage came at the right and appropriate time as his staff, particularly the first secretary, Miss Mattheyson, have just stepped up their efforts to look after the interests of South Africans visiting Korea.
In response club chairman Kaizer Motaung said, "I thank the honourable ambassador for his generous and warm welcome. We are here indebted to the government and all people of South Africa. We are here on a very serious assignment. It is not only about South Africa but the entire continent of Africa and we are aware of the mammoth task facing us," said a determined Motaung.
"You can see by the faces here that we really mean business and we are confident of the plans we have.We are looking forward to this tournament.
"The day when everybody back at home whether they are Chiefs or Pirates, ANC or Inkatha or Nationalist party, all get together under the banner and slogan of Love and Peace, has actually arrived. In conclusion we are pleased that you are here to welcome us and we know, with you, we are in
goods hands," said a very pleased Motaung.
Kaizer Chiefs got the invitation to participate in the inaugural Peace Cup following their succesful run during the 2001/2002 season, subsequently being voted 2002 CAF Africa Club of the Year.
Interestingly the club'slogan is and always been that of promoting peace in the South African communities - "Love and Peace".
The winners of the Peace Cup will walk away with $2 million, runners up will win $500 000 and Amakhosi begin their campaign on Tuesday, 15th July 2003 against top French side, Olympique Lyonnaise at the Daejeon world cup
