Respect the US - Ngcobo

Amakhosi striker Sthembiso Ngcobo jetted off with his Chiefs teammates Siphiwe Tshabalala, Itumeleng Khune and Reneilwe Letsholonyane to Cape Town on Sunday evening.

The Chiefs quartet will be hoping to feature for Bafana Bafana when they host the United States in the Nelson Mandela Challenge match to be played at the Green Point stadium on Wednesday evening.

Despite United States coach Bob Bradley omitting a number of his star attractions for the game Chiefs striker Ngcobo has warned that Bafana Bafana will be in for a tough outing in the mother city.

“I have seen the squad the American’s have chosen and we like them have also have left out some of our regular players so in that way I think things are balanced out” explained Ngcobo who went on to say.

“All of these new American players who have been called up like the young guys who Pitso has roped into our team will want to prove that they have what it takes to play regularly for their country. Even though Landon Donovan might not be coming there is still enough quality in this team to trouble us.”

The Americans who were eliminated during the last 16 stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup by Ghana are ranked amongst the top 25 teams in the world and facing a team in the top half of the rankings table that is spurring on Ngcobo.

“I hope that I do get the chance to play against the Americans as a country whose first sport is not football they have achieved a lot in recent years and we can learn from their example. For our country given that we have never beaten them in two previous internationals against them it will be a major boost for us if we are able to do so.”

The Chiefs striker was referring to matches contested between South Africa and the USA in 2000 and 2007 and on both occasions it was the US who emerged the victors winning 4-0 in Washington in 2000 and 1-0 at Ellis Park in 2007.

With Bafana never having scored against the Americans or kept a clean sheet against ‘Uncle Sam’s Army’ as the US national team are sometimes referred to by their fans Ngcobo is hoping that they can change those stats on Wednesday.

“I have read the record books and hopefully if Itumeleng Khune does play he can be the first South African goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet against the Americans. Should I get the chance to represent my country my hope is that I can be the first South African to score against them” said Ngcobo.

Three other Chiefs players will be in international action this week Tinashe Nengomasha, Thomas Sweswe and Knowledge Musona will do duty for the Zimbabwe national team when they face Mozambique in a friendly game in Maputo also on Wednesday.

The players are expected back at Naturena on Thursday.
