Same performance for first and second half wanted - Komphela
Same performance for first and second half wanted - Komphela

“We are looking at producing the same flair and attack for both halves,” comments coach Steve Komphela after completing the pre-match training on Friday afternoon. “Maritzburg United are a difficult side to play. Looking at their position on the log they will go full out and we should be prepared for that. To beat them, we have to produce the same performances in both halves of the match.”

Chiefs lost against Platinum Stars a fortnight ago, after producing a splendid first half performance. The same happened against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates last week. Amakhosi followed up a great first half with a weaker second 45 minutes, allowing the Buccaneers to equalise. Komphela is, of course, aware of this and he has urged his charges to work on this aspect of the game.

Kaizer Chiefs will welcome bottom-of-the-table Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership fixture at FNB Stadium this Saturday afternoon, 6 February 2016 (kick-off is at 18:00).

“They play counter-attack football,” says Komphela, while referring to Maritzburg’s style of play. “We must not allow them any space for counter attacking opportunities.”

Amakhosi are placed fourth on the Absa Premiership log with 29 points from 17 matches.

Coach Komphela will be competing against his former side for the third time this season. Chiefs beat the Team of Choice in the MTN8 and collected a point away in Pietermaritzburg.

The Team of Choice, coached by former Amakhosi mentor Ernst Middendorp, are placed 16th on the Absa Premiership log with eight points from 16 matches.

“We have two suspensions due to players having collected four yellow cards,” Komphela adds, referring to Erick Mathoho and Reneilwe Letsholonyane who won’t participate in the Maritzburg encounter. “However, with every absentee comes an opportunity for another player to show his mettle. We have options for both positions.”

In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and Chiefs have met in 19 league matches since 2005/06.

The Amakhosi have seven wins in comparison to for the Team of Choice, while seven matches have been drawn.

Tickets for the match are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide. The price of a ticket is R40 for adults and R10 for children under the age of 12.
