Santos move Chiefs to the Windy City

As the 2006 – 2007 winds down it seems certain that Chiefs will be making a piece of history, as this could well be the first time since the inception of the PSL in 1996 that Chiefs will have gone through a season with out playing a league game in Cape Town.

Earlier this season Ajax Cape Town opted to move Chiefs far away from the mother city when the two teams played to a nil all draw in Kimberley back in September. Now Ajax’s neighbours Santos have gone down a similar route - well not altogether the same route - instead of heading North like Ajax did, Santos have decided to take their match against The Amakhosi westwards away from Cape Town.

When Chiefs and Santos take to the field for their league game on the 22nd April, it will be at the Eastern Province Rugby Stadium in Port Elizabeth, 765 km’s from where they usually play their home games at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. A trip to Port Elizabeth will not be altogether foreign territory for Chiefs, as they recently played against Bloemfontein Celtic in an exhibition match for the Nelson Mandela Museum at the Eastern Province Rugby Stadium.

The Amakhosi though are not concerned at having to travel to Port Elizabeth instead of Cape Town with coach Kosta Papic saying of the change in venue. “We lost our last game to Black Leopards so we are obviously looking for a more inspired performance against Santos. Where we play the game is not important, we did though have the fortune of recently playing a friendly game in Port Elizabeth against Celtic so we are aware of the kind of conditions to expect out there”.

In the only other meeting between the two teams this year, which also happened to be Chiefs final game of 2006, The Amakhosi ran out winners at Loftus in what was an entertaining 3-2 Chiefs win.

Shaun Bartlett opened the scoring for Chiefs before Romano Scott levelled matters, Chiefs did not have to wait long to regain the advantage as Siyabonga Nkosi scored a minute after Scott had equalized to restore Chiefs' advantage.

Six minutes into the second half and Shaun Bartlett completed his brace as well as notching up his fifth goal in as many games. Magogi Gabonamong managed to sneak a goal in on the stroke of time but it was too late as Chiefs won the game 3-2.

Kick Off for the game to be played in Port Elizabeth has been set for 15h15 on Sunday 22nd April, as Chiefs seem set to round off a season without the shadow of table mountain looming large in the back ground.
