Formerly transfer-listed Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Gert Schalkwyk returned to full training with the Kaizer Chiefs first team on Tuesday morning, after he and a representative had a meeting with Amakhosi team manager Bobby Motaung on Monday which paved the way for Schalwyk’s return.

The former Wits University midfielder wasted no time in trying to impress Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral as he was early at training on Tuesday, and was heavily involved in the morning training session and did not let up. Schalkwyk though does have a long way to go before he is fully match fit as he has not played in a competitive game for more than six months.

Knuckling in

Schalkwyk did not want to say much on his first day back but he did take time to say a few words to kaizerchiefs.com and said, “for me right now I want to speak as little as possible and put in a lot of hard work and hopefully I will be back in the team very soon. I know that given the fact that I have been out of action for so long I need time to find my fitness and form, I have given myself two weeks to be back in contention for a spot in the match day squad”.

Life line

Motaung confirmed that a decision had been taken to allow Gert to start full training with the team and it was now up to him to make the most of the opportunity that has come his way.

Motaung said to kaizerchiefs.com “this is a life line for Gert he needs to show his full worth to the team, he is not expected to start playing straight away but hopefully he will be playing again soon. We are in a position where we needed to strengthen our log position and we hope that Gert having been on the outside for the past few months will have the desire and fire to push the team forward”.
