“We had seven good opportunities in the first half,” rued coach Ernst Middendorp after the 1-0 loss to Cape Town City. “Four of them were can’t miss chances. That’s four 100% chances and then we go into the break goalless.”
The comment basically summed up Wednesday evening’s game. Kaizer Chiefs completely dominated but couldn’t find the back of the net.
To make matter worse, as the coach added, “a mistake” cost us the goal. He was talking about goalkeeper Virgil Vries, who made a few fine saves, but failed to hold on to a high ball in the 79th minute. The ball bounced on the ground and Cape Town City netted their winner.
To be honest, Middendorp wasn’t making up any excuses. His comments about missed opportunities were backed up by his counterpart, Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy.
“We were fortunate to be 0-0 at the break,” McCarthy admitted. “Chiefs could easily have been 3-0 up. Our goalkeeper kept us in the game.”
What was especially disappointing for Middendorp was that it was the second time this year that Chiefs were much better than the opponent – the previous game was against Mamelodi Sundowns – but again no points were collected. Amakhosi eventually lost 2-1 to the Brazilians in a game that also should have be won, looking at the excellent performance of the Glamour Boys on the day.
“We lost as a team.” the Chiefs coach concluded about Wednesday night’s Absa Premiership fixture. “We have to face it and move on.”
