Siphiwe ‘Shabba’ Tshabalala’s sublime goal against SuperSport United on 29 April has been voted the Absa Premiership’s Goal of the Month for April, as announced at the PSL offices this morning. This is the evergreen midfield maestro’s second such award this past season, having bagged the February prize for his stunner against Free State Stars.
Shabba’s moment of brilliance came when he spotted Reyaad Pieterse off his line and, from the edge of the penalty area, deftly chipped the ball over the stranded Matsatsantsa goalkeeper into a gaping net. The ageless veteran scored an almost identical goal four days earlier against Cape Town City FC, which came third in the judges’ voting.
The goal brought Tshabalala’s league tally to seven goals for the season to add to the one cup goal he netted for Kaizer Chiefs in 2016/17.
“It is great to still be able to score some of the goals and help the team win matches,” says a thankful Shabba after receiving his award. “It’s important to work as a team by creating chances for each other.”
The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder received a trophy and R5 000 for the winning goal, which must be a strong contender for Goal of the Season.
Shabba, who enjoyed good form this season and scored beautiful yet crucial goals, celebrated his 50th goal for the club as he marked 10 seasons with the Glamour Boys. He’s aiming to do even better with the team in the new season.
