“I am happy to form part of the illustrious names that captained Chiefs in the past,” says Shabba. Former Kaizer Chiefs captains include among others Neil Tovey, Cyril Nzama and Patrick Mabedi and in the yesteryears Ryder Mofokeng is notable as the long serving captain. Ryder captained Chiefs between 1975 and 1986.
“I will do my best with the support of my colleagues,” continues Shabba. “We have a good squad of players who are qualified to lead the team. The quality and the leadership in the team makes me grateful to be a part of this great institution.”
Shabba has appeared for Chiefs in 286 matches and rattling the net on 41 occasions since he became a Glamour Boy in 2007. The 30 year old is known globally for scoring the first goal of the 2010 Fifa World Cup against Mexico in the 55th minute. The game went on to finish at a 1–1 draw. The goal later received a nomination for goal of the year by Fifa.
“I will be a great example on and off the pitch,” continues Shabba. “I will have to do extra weight lifting and gain muscles to lift trophies for our supporters and the Club.” concludes Shabba.
Shabba will be ably assisted by his Captains Committee of:
Pa Gaxa, Willard Katsande, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Lorenzo Gordinho.

Coach Steve Komphela responds, “It is an honour that comes with a great responsibility for Shabba. He is capable - I think he will deliver as expected. Shabba has immense leadership qualities and more so, he works with a captains committee that will support him in his duties.”
Shabba will lead his troops this Saturday for the first time as the official captain of the team when Chiefs take on their archrivals Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup.
