Siphiwe ‘Shabba’ Tshabalala scored a cracker of a free-kick against Free State Stars to be voted by the fans as Absa Goal of the Month for February. The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder was present at the award ceremony at the PSL office this afternoon.
“It was a well taken set-piece,” Tshabalala remembers, before adding, “I put a lot of effort in practising free-kicks.”
Amakhosi won the match 3-1, with Shabba’s goal coming in the 18th minute. The encounter took place at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 7 February 2017.
“I work hard, there’s nothing that has changed in the way I play,” Tshabalala continues. “I am a team player and the stats are there to back that up.”
The midfielder is currently in a good nick. He also shared his opinion on Amakhosi’s present form.
“We are a quality team and we presently enjoy a good run. However, we are still a work in progress. We want to improve even further and we focus on what we have to do to achieve that.”
When asked about the side’s mid-season slump late last year, ‘Shabba’ responds with supreme confidence.
“We went through a phase when things went horribly wrong. That’s when we rallied behind the coach. Steve Komphela is not only a coach - he is like a brother and father to us. I’m just happy that we are playing good football at the moment and that the results are coming. I feel positive that with this kind of work ethic, we will soon lift a trophy.”
‘Shabba’ will reach the age of 33 later this year. However, that doesn’t stop him from playing like a youngster, even regularly winning balls in the midfield. Is there any recipe?
The midfielder smiles upon hearing this question, modestly answering: “I am happy with my contribution. I have scored five goals this season. I had fourteen assists last season compared to two this season. But what's important is to contribute to the team to win games and trophies.”
