Veteran Amakhosi midfielder Gerald Sibeko played his part in guiding Chiefs through to the last 16 stage of the Nedbank Cup tournament, when he converted and extra time spot kick to help see Chiefs get past National First Division side Nathi Lions in the round of 32 on Sunday.

Sibeko making his first appearance of the season when he entered the game as a second half substitute in a conversation about the game on Monday morning said to kaizerchiefs.com “when you get to play after so long you really enjoy it. I was glad to have gotten a run out against Nathi Lions and scoring the winner made my first game of the season all the more memorable.”

With the scores dead locked at 2 – 2 Sibeko was tasked with the duty of taking an extra time penalty kick as he explained to kaizercheifs.com that he overcame pre-kick nerves to send the ball home.

“When we got the spot kick we looked over to the bench and the indication was that I should take the kick, I was a bit nervous and when the ball hit the keepers hand everything seemed to stop for a short while and when it went past him I was ecstatic.”

For Sibeko scoring the winning goal in the game was made all the more sweeter as he believes that he played a part in allowing Lions to find their second goal, “I felt that I was partly responsible for them getting level with us.

So when the spot kick came despite all the nerves and expectations of our fans I felt it was my duty to correct my earlier indiscretion and I am glad that everything worked out for the team and our supporters.”

With the next round of the competition in mind Sibeko believes that Chiefs can take the lessons of the game against Nathi Lions forward with them “if we facing another team from the lower division in the next round we know that we have to convert every chance we get.

The lower league teams they seem to grow in confidence the longer they play you and at 1 – 0 or 2 – 0 the game is not won, we need to score as many goals as we can early on against these sides. I do not want any of the fans getting a heart attack again, lets get the job done early on in the next game.”
