South Africa beat Equatorial Guinea 4-1 in a 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday and will face Sierra Leone this weekend. “I am getting better,” reacts Sibeko, who was told by Bafana doctor Ephraim Nematswerani that he is fit to train with the group again. “The 4-1 win against Equatorial Guinea gave us a lot of confidence,” continues the skilful midfielder, “the guys are all very positive about the upcoming game against Sierra Leone.”
Besides Sibeko, Amakhosi’s Itumeleng Khune, Moketi Tsotetsi and Siphiwe Tshabalala are also part of the South African national squad.
Bafana coach Joel Santana selected Khune as the number one keeper for the Equatorial Guinea encounter above former Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez, who is now at German Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld.
Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena had to leave the field due to a shin injury on Saturday and has been told by the medical staff to take a three-day rest. If Mokoena does not recover from his injury before Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone, Tsotetsi could be an option to replace the Bafana captain at the heart of the defence.
