Sithebe Back for Chiefs Against City in a Soldout Game

Kaizer Chiefs are back in Cape Town for the first time this year for a league match against Cape Town City at Athlone Stadium. The sold-out match will see the two teams meet for the second time this season, having met back in October at FNB Stadium.

This is the first official game in three weeks for Amakhosi after their last encounter, which was the Soweto Derby early in March.

Coach Cavin Johnson is not a happy man after losing a few players through injury and suspension. The team will be without Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo, as they accumulated four yellows. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo has been added to the injury list after picking up an ankle injury at training. He joins Keagan Dolly, George Matlou and Thatayone Ditlhokwe in the doctor’s rooms.

The team will be delighted to welcome Edmilson Dove back after the Mozambican missed the last two matches through suspension.

In the standings, Amakhosi are 4th with 29 points after 20 matches. City are 5th with 31 points, after also playing 20 games.

Coach Johnson has made five changes to the team when compared to the one that started the Soweto Derby on 9 March against Pirates.

The changes see Reeve Frosler replaced by Dove in defence. In midfield, Edson Castillo and Yusuf Maart are replaced Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Siyethemba Sithebe, respectively. Sithebe was last in action for Amakhosi against Mamelodi Sundowns on 9 August 2023, before being sidelined by injury. Attacking midfielder, Ngcobo’s place will be taken by Mduduzi Shabalala, and the last change sees Wandile Duba come in for Christian Saile.

The Glamour Boys will go for their usual 4-2-3-1 formation.

Bruce Bvuma, who returned from Algeria with Bafana Bafana, is the goalkeeper.

The defence will have S’fiso Hlanti on the left, Dove and Given Msimango at the centre of defence, and Zitha Kwinika on the right.

Mthethwa and Sithebe will hold the midfield.

Attacking wingers are Pule Mmodi and the double goal scorer in the Derby, Ashley Du Preez, on the left and right flank respectively. Shabalala will play behind the main striker.

Duba will lead Amakhosi’s attack this afternoon.

With Maart missing the match, Msimango will wear the captain’s armband for the first time for Amakhosi.

Notably, Aden McCarthy - who is former player Fabian McCarthy’s son - will sit on the bench after being promoted from the youth structures.

This afternoon’s match officials are referee Philangenkosi Khumalo. Assistants are assisted by Kamohelo Ramutsindela and Xolani Hlatshwayo. The fourth official is Skhumbuzo Gasa.

The sold-out DStv Premiership clash between Amakhosi and the Citizens commences at 15:30 at Athlone Stadium in Athlone. The match is live on SuperSport’s PSL Channel 202 on DStv, SABC 1 and SABC radio stations - with regular updates of the match on X (Twitter) @KaizerChiefs.
