Solinas happy with response

“We played very well in the first half,” said coach Giovanni Solinas after the one-all draw against Baroka FC on Tuesday night. “We controlled the game and created a few possibilities.

“Baroka didn’t play in the weekend and they were fresh, while we looked a bit fatigued after Saturday evening’s match against Free State Stars and that was a big factor, especially towards the end of the game.”

Amakhosi have a tough schedule and after arriving back from Polokwane will travel tomorrow to KwaZulu-Natal to face Maritzburg United on Friday night.

“We will prepare for the next game,” added Solinas. “We have a good enough squad to cope with the situation. We will continue to rotate some players, but we can’t change too much.”

Baroka FC took the lead in the 36th minute after Daniel Cardoso headed the ball past Itumeleng Khune into his own goal.

“We conceded through a defensive blunder,” admitted Solinas. “But we reacted very well to equalise shortly thereafter.”

Siphiwe Tshabalala’s exquisitely taken free-kick brought parity to the game in the 43th minute. “Shabba had a fine performance and added with a goal too,” the Chiefs coach remarked. “He also defended well and played a good passing game.

“The players work hard at training and I am confident that we will start playing much better once we start having more sessions to work on, for example, tactics. As for now, we will continue to focus on the recovering process to be ready for the next game.”

Solinas concluded by heaping praise on his players for a gutsy performance: “I am happy with the way my players are responding, although we need more consistency to compete for league and cup honours.”

Maritzburg United is up next at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening, 17 August (kick-off is at 20:00).
