“We will show our intentions from the word go,” commented coach Ernst Middendorp ahead of this evening’s clash against Zesco United. “We will field a starting XI that make will make our intentions clear. We will not pull any punches tonight. It’s not going to be easy though.”
Chiefs take on the Zambian side Zesco United. Amakhosi supporters and South Africans in general are waiting in anticipation for tonight’s second leg of the play-off round which is a ticket to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Amakhosi concluded their pre-match training session on Friday night. “We just have to remain calm,” said Middendorp. “More focus is required in these kinds of situations. It is in our hands.”
Zesco is leading 3-1 on aggregate. With a handy away goal, thanks to Khama Billiat’s strike in Zambia, Chiefs needs to win with a two-goal margin to progress.
“We are coming from a tough encounter locally,” Middendorp commented, looking back on the 3-2 win over AmaZulu on Wednesday evening. “We will field the best side despite injuries to some of our players.”
Confirming the availability for his players, the German coach confirmed the numerous absentees due to an assortment of injuries. Joseph Molangoane, Itumeleng Khune, Philani Zulu and Ramahlwe Mphahlele are ruled out of contention for places.
“We will have a close look at Lebogang Manyama and hope that he’ll make a late fitness test,” Middendorp explained. “We are presently going through a schedule that’s taxing. We are not complaining, but it is a factor to consider in football. We have a good enough squad to select a winning combination.”
In terms of what is anticipated from Zesco, Middendorp remarked, “It is normal when you go into any match with the opponent leading that, surely, they will be full of confidence. The possibilities are that they will try to defend their lead or score an early goal. We have worked out a plan to confront all these possibilities. In the main, however, we will be applying our strengths.”
