Kaizer Chiefs can take a big step towards fulfilling their Absa Premiership title ambitions should they manage to defeat Mamelodi Sundowns, who like the Amakhosi still have a chance of lifting the league crown at the end of the season in an Absa Premiership clash on Sunday.

Chiefs are currently in third place on the league table will travel to face fourth place Mamelodi Sundowns in a must win league clash at the Loftus Stadium in Tshwane on Sunday afternoon, a win will assist the victors as it will help them keep in touch with the front two teams Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town.

Recent History

The Amakhosi’s clashes with Sundowns have always been colourful affairs, and in recent years seasons the games have produced goals galore as well as excitement and many talking points. When the teams met earlier in the season it was Chiefs who emerged as the victors, Kaizer Motaung Junior scored the game only goal in a 1-0 Chiefs win.

Should Chiefs manage to pick up the three points once more it would be the third time in the PSL era that they would have managed to defeat Sundowns home and away in the same season. The last time Chiefs managed to do that was during the 2008 – 2009 season. The last three clashes between the teams have produced nine goals at an average of three goals a game.

Chiefs have managed to do a league double over Sundowns Tshwane rivals SuperSport United and should they defeat the Brazilians on Sunday it will be the first time in a PSL season that they had managed to win all four games against Tshwane teams.

Current form

Sundowns last scheduled league outing against Amazulu on April 16th was postponed as a result of inclement weather in Durban, which meant that in April the Brazilians have been involved in just one Absa Premiership fixture which was on the 6th April against Ajax Cape Town. Trailing 4-1 at one stage in the game Sundowns fought back to earn a commendable 4-4 draw with the Urban Warriors.

Chiefs in the meanwhile have won their last two league games against SuperSport United and Mpumalanga Black Aces, they did though lose their last game which was a Nedbank Cup quarter-final encounter this past Sunday. The Amakhosi are undefeated in their last 13 league games, having won seven and drawn six of these games.

Missing out

Chiefs are still minus central defender Valery Nahayo who was sent off two weeks ago during Chiefs 2-0 league win over Mpumalanga Black Aces, it is the second game he misses after sitting out Chiefs Nedbank Cup game this past weekend. Sundowns will missing Siyanda Xulu and Esrom Nyandoro the pair are suspended for the game.
