Kaizer Chiefs                                (1) 3 (Zuma 20’, Castro 48’, Billiat 103’)

Kaizer Chiefs easily beat Free State Stars 3-0 in an MTN8 quarter-final game at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. The goals were scored by Dumsani Zuma, Leonardo Castro and Khama Billiat. It was a classy performance from the Glamour Boys, who fully deserved to reach the semi-finals.

There were some fresh faces in the starting line-up compared to Tuesday’s league fixture against Bidvest Wits. Virgil Vries, Siyabonga Ngezana, Joseph Molangoane and Dumsani Zuma all came in, replacing Itumeleng Khune, Erick Mathoho, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Bernard Parker.

Of the four changes, only one was not coach Giovanni Solinas’ decision, as Khune had requested leave to attend to a personal matter. It resulted in Virgil Vries making his official debut for the Glamour Boys.

The opening 15 minutes were a tight affair with most of the battles being fought in the middle of the park.

Thereafter, however, Chiefs took control of the game. It resulted in a great opportunity for Daniel Cardoso, but the defender’s left-footed shot flew over the crossbar.

A few minutes later, there was some excellent combination play between several Chiefs players, which led to loud applause from the Amakhosi supporters. Accordingly, the ball was passed to Ramahlwe Mphahlele on the right, who quickly played the ball to Joseph Molangoane inside the box. ‘Tight’ turned and distributed the ball to Dumsani Zuma, who coolly slotted it into the back of the net. It was the 20th minute and it was 1-0.

Soon thereafter, both Zuma and Molangoane got chances to extend the lead, but they couldn’t get the ball past the Free State Stars goalkeeper.

Billiat, Zuma and Molangoane all looked lively and had the Free State Stars defence regularly into all sorts of problems, while Siphelele Ntshangase did well in a more defensive midfield role from which he sprayed passes around with ease.

Vries, meanwhile, had a relatively quiet first half, although he had to come into action in the 34th minute, but he easily dealt with Yusuf Jappie’s shot.

Cardoso nearly added the second just before the break, but his header from a set-piece was worked to corner by an Ea Lla Koto defender.

Chiefs created six chances in the first half, having two shots on target. It was a dominating performance, which probably deserved one more goal.

That second goal arrived, however, soon in the second half. There was another great combination play, with the ball arriving after a few passes at Ntshangase’s feet. The midfielder quickly played the ball deep to Leonardo Castro, who neatly chipped the ball with his left foot over the incoming Free State Stars goalkeeper into the back of the net, 2-0.

But there was an enormous set-back when Makhehleni Makhaula made a horrific tackle on Molangoane soon after Castro’s goal. It was terrible to watch and ‘Tight’ had to be stretchered off with what looked like a broken ankle.

Amakhosi continued to be the better side and, especially, substitute Bernard Parker, who had come on for Molangoane, was unlucky that his fierce shot from long distance ended in the side netting, instead of in goal.

There were 13 minutes of additional time, due to a lot of stoppage time due to injuries, and it was Khama Billiat who scored in the dying seconds of the game the 3-0 after a great pass deep from Castro. It was the Zimbabwean’s first goal wearing the Gold and Black jersey.

It was a good overall performance of Amakhosi, who were probably a bit unlucky not to have won with an even bigger margin.

Key moment in the match:

The key moment of the match was probably getting the second goal early in the second half. Leonardo Castro’s goal was an enormous boost for the confidence of the Kaizer Chiefs side.

Most Valuable Player (MVP):

Kaizer Chiefs played well and there were several Glamour Boys who did excellently. Joseph Molangoane always looked threatening when on the ball, until he had to be replaced due to injury, and Dumsani Zuma also performed admirable, especially in the first half, while Siphelele Ntshangase was truly brilliant in midfield. It was Ntshangase who was awarded the Man of the Match award, deservedly so.
