“It’s their home game,” says Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite about the Absa Premiership clash on Tuesday evening. “Even though we used the Peter Mokaba Stadium for our home games in December. As a result, the stadium is our home as well. However, technically we play an away game.” The encounter will be played in Polokwane (kick-off at 19:30).
Amakhosi won 2-1 against Botswana’s Township Rollers in the first leg of the preliminary round of the African Champions League on Saturday evening.
“After scoring that first goal,” reflects Mashamaite on the Rollers encounter. “We had the potential to finish it, as we created numerous chances. But we gave them a breather by not scoring, which gave them time to get back into the game.”
The Botswana side equalised just after the break, before Amakhosi’s captain headed in the winner in injury-time.
“We regularly work on set-pieces,” Mashamaite reacts, “it can help to bail us out, like it did against Rollers.”
Amakhosi are presently on top of the Absa Premiership log with 47 points from 19 matches, while Matsatsantsa are in eighth position with 24 points (18 games).
Earlier in the season, Chiefs beat SuperSport United 2-0 at home, thanks to goals from Reneilwe Letsholonyane and George Lebese.
“It will be a tough one,” Mashamaite says about Tuesday evening’s clash. “There are no easy games against SuperSport United. Besides that, we need to get our act together. However, if we play with consistency, I am confident that we can get a result.”
