SuperSport poser for Ertugral
SuperSport poser for Ertugral

When Chiefs were pulled out of the hat during Monday’s draw for the Telkom Knock Out Cup ¼ final draw, a number of those in the audience were tempting fate as they scream aloud SuperSport United’s name as the team Chiefs would meet in the next round of the competition.

As fate would have it, The Amakhosi drew SuperSport United in what is probably the toughest clash of the next round, it also is the fifth meeting between the two teams in a cup game over the past four seasons.

Questions may arise as to whether Chiefs can overcome another tough opponent in the ¼ finals, just as they did when they defeated Moroka Swallows on penalty kicks in the opening round.

Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral though is not shying away from the fact that his team will have another eventful day at the office against United in their bid to progress further in the 2007 Telkom Knockout Cup.

There is one factor that Ertugral can rely on and that is the fact that his current team have recorded three wins over United in the last three-cup clashes between the teams.

One shot

Such has been the unpredictable nature of the 2007 Telkom Knockout that the form book has been torn up and as it stands four teams from the bottom half of the draw have advanced at the expense of teams in the top half of the draw.

Chiefs who were seeded ninth for the competition, have already bundled out one seeded team in Moroka Swallows, and will be aiming to do the same against United in just over two weeks time.

“We have again been handed the toughest and most challenging draw of the round. SuperSport are a team renowned for their ability to go the distance in Cup competitions. The thing is that Chiefs have had the better of them in recent times in Cup competitions and that is a trend that we would like to keep up. SuperSport though are getting better and better with every game”.

Intense battle

Ertugral has gone on to add that his team will be expecting nothing less than a battle royale, when they face SuperSport in the last of the ¼ Finals scheduled for the 28th October.

As it was when they drew with Matsasantsa in a league game in September, “we know from past experiences against SuperSport that they play as a very tight unit especially at the back. They do not easily give up possession and if you watched their last sixteen game against Santos you will notice that they will capitalize on any mistake you make and will punish you”.
