Songwiqi who scored on his official debut in last month’s 3-0 league win over defending Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United, spoke to kaizerchiefs.com about the benefits of playing alongside players of the talent currently in the Chiefs squad.
“For me being in a team with players who have shone for the Chiefs and at international level is very encouraging, seeing a young player like Knowledge Musona grab his opportunity and do so well makes me want to emulate him and others like him.”
According to the Port Elizabeth-born Songwiqi, the experienced campaigners in the team have made adapting to life at Chiefs easy, “I thought it would be hard when I first came to Chiefs to fit in.
Surprisingly adapting to the team has not been that way simply because the guys have been really accommodating and have helped me through my orientation period.”
On the field Songwiqi believes he has adapted well to the Chiefs system of play, “I had to adjust to play the way the coach wanted me to play and had to fit into the system initially.
It has become easier for me to play with the team as the season has moved on and I am really enjoying myself, all the players in the team complement each other well and when you enjoying yourself on the field everything else just falls into place, winning games etc.”
Despite his debut day heroics, Songwiqi insists he feels no pressure and is happy to play a bit part role for the team while he takes time to establish himself at the club.
“I don’t know what the expectations are of me and I really don’t want to know.
I am living my dream being here at Chiefs and all I want to do is work hard in training and hopefully play good football when I get the chance to feature in a game situation.”
