Tau along with Orlando Pirates Andile Jali and Ajax Cape Town’s Thulani Serero were on Friday listed as candidates for the award which was last season won by SuperSport United’s Morgan Gould.
Commenting on his nomination Tau said, “it is a great feeling to be amongst the candidates for player of the season prize, I would like to thank GOD as well as the coach, my teammates and all the structures at the club for their help guidance and support throughout the season.”
The Chiefs skipper was aware of the fact that he would be going up against one of his fellow nominees Thulani Serero as he headed into Saturday’s game against Ajax Cape Town, and facing the young Urban Warrior spurred him on.
“Before the game against Ajax knowing that Serero was also a nominee motivated me and I knew that it would be the platform for me to take on a fellow nominee.”
Jimmy has scored more goals this season than he has during any other during his ten season professional career and when quizzed as to what he had done differently in this campaign in relation to the others, he explained saying.
“I think I have been more consistent this season than I was in previous ones, at the start of the season the coach showed me what I was lacking in my game and he told me to improve at my weaknesses and excel in my strong points.
I have tried to do that and also I was handed a more attacking role at times and managed to with the technical team’s guidance fulfil the tasks give to me.”
Tau also believes that he would not have managed to play the way he has and would enjoyed himself during matches had it not been for the support of the rest of the team.
“As a captain and a team member it is also important to have the respect of your peers and I must say that the guys have respected me and supported me throughout the season and I must thank them for that.”
The Amakhosi number 2 is aware that he is in good company on the Absa Premiership player of the year nominees list, “Thulani and Andile are two fantastic young players, they are great talents and I am certain that in the future they will have a big say in the fortunes of the national team.”
For now Tau has one more wish for the 2010 – 2011 season, he opened up as to what it is explaining, “since I joined Chiefs in 2005 it has been my desire to win the league title. I pray that my wish is granted, we have worked hard to get here and we still have a shot at the title.
Lifting the trophy will be huge for us, it is good that as we head into the final game of the season that there is mass uncertainty as to who will be champions.”
