“In passing our condolences from Kaizer Chiefs, I would like to thank Shoes’ family, because he was a disciplined athlete,” Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung said, when paying tribute to the legendary John Moshoeu.

A visibly sad Motaung was among an array of speakers at the funeral of the former South African and Chiefs legend.

The funeral service of Moshoeu took place on Freedom Day, 27 April. The service was attended by dignitaries and people from all walks of life, predominately past and present players and soccer administrators.

“It is sad to lose Shoes in this way,” the Chiefs Chairman refers to the passing of Moshoeu due to illness. “He was always health conscious and a true professional. Before he passed away, we had various interesting Club related conversations.”

The former Amakhosi star often visited Chiefs Village before he passed away, usually with his team Alexandra United to play in several practice matches.

“Shoes was like a son to me,” Motaung continued, “and he treated me as such (like a father). We held telephone conversations on numerous occasions even when he was ill. It is unfortunate that during his last days we could not see him due to his family’s wish to grand him privacy and peace of mind.”

“We will remember him dearly. I challenge the intellectual community to scribe his life story. A documentary would be fitting to illustrate the life and times of Shoes. That documentary should be included in the school curriculum.”

“I have a secret to share. Only my grandson knows about it, as he understands various sporting codes. Every time when I watch Cristiano Ronaldo play, I see Shoes. His pace, his footwork and his strength always remind me of Shoes.”

“Most young people don't realise that what they see at the stadium or via the television is a polished product,” concluded Motaung. “However, there is a lot of investment and sacrifice that goes into preparing an athlete to perform at his peak. Shoes is a great example of the commitment and discipline needed to achieve at the highest level.”

“My condolences go to the family and his friends. Shoes fought his fight. Shoes ran his race.”

The Amakhosi Chairman was flanked by the current Chiefs Team and management when Moshoeu was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetrey in Johannesburg.
