There can be nothing like a cup game against and old foe to get you all excited and motivated and ensure that you will wake up early each morning and get to the training ground early, as you prepare to face this opponent.

For Chiefs defender Onismor Bhasera, the thought of playing against a very technically astute SuperSport United, has got him all pumped up as he waits for Sunday’s Telkom Cup clash with Matsasantsa. Bhasera is further buoyed ahead of what could well be a battle in all senses of the word at the Vodacom Loftus Stadium in Tshwane on Sunday, as he believes that Chiefs' recent dominance over United in Cup matches hands them the edge going into Sunday’s quarterfinal.

Getting the job done

In what has been a sound start to his Chiefs career, the 20-year-old Zimbabwean international left back is not planning on staying on the field longer than 90 minutes against SuperSport. He plans to have the game sealed up within regulation time, and is not entertaining any talk of extra time and a penalty shoot out.

“Going into extra time and a penalty shoot out is an outcome we do not want to even think about. At the moment our focus is on getting the job done early on against United and moving on into the semifinals. Whatever it takes, we will at all costs try and get ourselves through inside 90 minutes.”

Super advantage

While many people dismiss the fact that Chiefs have not been defeated by United in their last three Cup meetings as significant, Bhasera believes that the fact that three seasons have gone by since SuperSport were last successful over Chiefs in a cup match, weighs heavily in The Amakhosi’s favor.

“While history might not win us the game, it is important to note that we have done something that worked in the past against them, so we take those lessons with us into this game and hopefully that can work as a guide towards us gaining victory on Sunday.”

Keeping the edge

At the end of Sunday’s game, Onismor is hoping that Chiefs would have made it cup win number four over United in recent years, as he wants the record books to reflect positively in The Amakhosi’s favor.

“Although they say history is not important in winning matches, it is our past that shapes our future and if we can keep the record books intact it will bode well for Chiefs teams in the future when they come up against SuperSport United.”
