Stuart Baxter watched Kaizer Chiefs faithful dressed in gold and black blowing Vuvuzela’s and in full song arriving in numbers at the Club’s HQ in Naturena on Friday ahead of the Soweto derby on Saturday, 08 December 2012 at FNB Stadium.
The Soweto derby has been seen by many as the game that divides even the Parliament into two and Kaizer Chiefs Corporate Communications Manager, Vina Maphosa was quoted this week as saying; “During the Soweto derby South Africa comes to a standstill,”
The Soweto derby involving Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is the stuff of legends, a meeting between the two South Africa’s biggest Clubs.
“The game means a lot to the fans not only those who come from Soweto where both Clubs originates. Supporters drive from as far as Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Mpumalanga and the neighbouring countries.
It is also a game that invokes a lot of memories and emotions because of the history between the two Clubs. I hope they can cheer the team the whole game, win or lose we must stick together. The supporters remain key to our success and we would like to hear them in full song for the duration of the game.
“It is a huge game and one can see by the number of fans who were here to give the team a send-off as they were leaving for the camp this afternoon,” said Baxter speaking to kaizerchiefs.com on Friday afternoon before the team headed to camp.
Back to the game Baxter who guided his side to an emphatic 3-0 win against Ajax Cape Town midweek is pleased with the preparations; “We had an opportunity to meet on Thursday to talk about the game we played against Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday evening. I was pleased with the three points but I felt there were some areas we needed to address ahead of the derby.
“I am satisfied with our preparations for Saturday. The players are very focused…as a Coach you always ask yourself if you have prepared well tactically. The players looked focused and we are ready for the game.
“We are coming up against Orlando Pirates and we all know what they are capable of doing. They have a good team and whoever they select on the day is capable of doing the job.
“Our approach is not going to change and we will go for a win like we have done for other games since the start of the season. We are going to this game like all the games to defend the badge and the pride of Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.
This game is worth three points and it will be even more important to win the game against a team that share with us the same ambition to win the league. However, it will not be a decider. The league is a marathon and there is a long way to go,” added Baxter.
Gates will open at 11:00 and kick-off for the game is at 15:30.
