“Kaizer Chiefs’ new away jersey reminds me of the one we wore during the 2001/2002 season,” comments Amakhosi’s former defender Nhlanhla Kubeka, who played in that historic season.

“It was during the time of Vat Alles, when we won the Vodacom Challenge, the BP Top 8, the Coca-Cola Cup and the Mandela Cup (African Cup Winners’ Cup).”

Chiefs’ new away jersey for the 2016/2017 season brings back fond memories for Kubeka: “On a personal level, I was at the peak of my soccer career at the time. It was a wonderful period and this new away jersey brings me back to those beautiful days when we won trophy after trophy in 2001.”

Interestingly enough, that 2001/2002 season was the first of the now 15 year partnership with Nike.

Kubeka helped select last week the Champion Coach, Philani Ndlovu, for this afternoon’s Carling Black Label Cup match against Orlando Pirates. The former defender also guided the Champions Coach yesterday and will do the same today.

“I have been impressed with Philani,” comments Kubeka. “He knows the game and his knowledge about Chiefs and the team is fantastic. He has the qualities for a good coach. I hope that we will win today.”

The Carling Black Label Champions Cup match between Amakhosi and the Buccaneers will be played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 30 July (kick-off at 15:30). The game has been sold out.

We advise supporters to come early to the stadium.
