Maritzburg United: (2) 2 (De Jongh 2’, Jayiya (pen) 34’)

Kaizer Chiefs: (1) 2 (Kinston Nkatha 6’, Mashamaite 79)

Coach Baxter’s men surrendered their 9 game winning streak record at the hands of Maritzburg United on Tuesday. The highly contested Absa Premiership game was played at the Harry Gwala Stadium, in Pietermaritzburg.

Coach Baxter was full of praise for his lads for displaying a courageous attitude during the game, “I have said previously at the press conference that I am a performance based coach. If we had lost here tonight I would still be pleased with the players’ commitment to keep playing football,” said Baxter.

“There are some of the things that you can’t control. If someone lashes one in from a quarter metre or the referee gives penalty, you have got no control of that. We came from behind twice and had to grind out a point tonight. It was a massive point we gained tonight. I was pleased with the players’ performances tonight,” continued Baxter.

“You don’t go through many seasons winning every game. What you can do is to go for a long time without losing. What this does to us is that we have not lost for about 13 games in a row. We are not going to be easy to catch, we are going to make sure we keep plugging away. We are going to show commitment and the way of playing football. We have to make sure that we give the last drop of our energy,” continued Baxter.

Coach Baxter spoke highly about his two debutants after the game,

“Mphela got himself into two decent chances within the short space of time. He is not physically in shape as he wants to and also he doesn’t understand completely the way we play. Mind you he has done only four training sessions since he signed for the Club. I am sure Katlego will be a major asset for Chiefs going forward

“As for Gordinho making his full debut, the young boy in his debut, giving away a penalty very easily you could collapse. He did show a great character as he kept playing. He was played out of position, he is a centre back and we just think he is just a good allrounder,” commented Baxter.

“Four minus four available fullbacks, Moleko, Dladla, Masilela and Ritchie transferred. Gordinho had to step up today and maybe in Namibia someone else has to step up, we have to share the load and try to win the next game,” concluded Baxter.
