“Excitement” is a word that has been used a lot this week in conversations revolving around Kgaogelo Sekgota.

The attacking winger certainly set tongues wagging – and got the pulses of the Amakhosi faithful racing with a scintillating second half cameo appearance in the Carling Black Label Cup Soweto Derby victory over Orlando Pirates over the weekend.

And while the new Amakhosi recruit is trying his utmost to keep a level head and focus on his big new job at hand, he admits his family and friends can hardly contain themselves at seeing him in Chiefs colours.

“They are very excited for me. I have to adapt to the excitement and focus on the work. It is a huge achievement for me as a player (signing for Chiefs). It is a big club, with good, experienced players around and I am ready to work,” says the soft-spoken midfielder, who joined Amakhosi in July from Moroka Swallows, where he picked up good experience in playing 24 DSTV Premiership matches for the Birds last season.

And while he has captured the eye and the attention, Sekgota is ready to knuckle down and play down the noise, but to focus on the hard yards needed to reclaim the glory for the Amakhosi.

“It is a daily prayer for me to achieve trophies with the club and help to get victories for the supporters and for me as a an individual. Obviously, I have to study my teammates, I have to respect the tactics of the coach and try to do my best for the club and for me as a player,” Sekgota says with maturity.

His coach Stuart Baxter hailed him as a game changer against Pirates, but it will be Sekgota’s aim to now establish himself as a regular part of the coach’s first team plans.

Sekgota also has Premiership experience with BIDVest, as well as a stint in Portugal under his belt, so he has served his dues and is looking to use his energy and drive to take Chiefs forward and give the club a new dimension this season.

With the formalities of his signing and the adrenaline of a debut in the Soweto Derby out of the way, he is now looking ahead to the new season.

“I have realized that Chiefs is one of the biggest teams in South Africa and Africa. The most important thing is hard work and dedication for the club to give them good results.  To the fans, I would like to say there are more good things coming,” says Sekgota in conclusion.
