“Wow, this is glamorous,” comments Tervin Godi, a Grade 9 learner from Geelhout Secondary School, when walking over the Village, where Kaizer Chiefs’ headquarters, training facilities and youth development are based.

“This is huge compared to what I have seen at the other teams.”

The Rustenburg-based Geelhout Secondary School had an opportunity to tour Chiefs’ facilities on Thursday afternoon.

“The facilities here are out of this world,” assesses Godi. “I knew Chiefs was the best, but I didn’t realise it was this big. This is amazing and surely this must position the team among the best on the African continent, let alone the world.”

Godi is a budding soccer player and has high hopes of breaking into the professional ranks one day: “I play as a striker and with the experience gathered today, I plan to work much harder to improve my game. It’s my wish to play for Chiefs.”

Godi’s favourite player is George Lebese: “His ball sense and style appeal to me.”

Mr Sedumedi is the school’s Chairperson of Sports and a big Chiefs supporter: “I grew up as an Amakhosi. My brother inspired my choice, he was a staunch Chiefs man.”

Sedumedi admired Ryder Mofokeng in the seventies, while goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is his favourite from the current crop of players. “The aim of visiting Chiefs is to expose the learners to the best team on the continent,” Sedumedi explains his decision to take the kids to the Village.

“To be honest, I love Chiefs, but I didn’t expect to see what I am seeing now, this is the best. The trip has attracted a lot of interest from our learners. Most have declared they’re going back to school to work hard and, hopefully, they will be ready to play for Chiefs one day. One thing is for sure, they have all become Amakhosi today.”

Chiefs’ next home league fixture is against league table leaders Bidvest Wits at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, December 19 (kick-off is at 18:00). Tickets are available on sale at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide at a cost of R60.

Before the Wits encounter, Amakhosi will face Mamelodi Sundowns in a sold out Telkom Knockout final at the Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium (kick-off is at 18:00).
