“It is time to shift focus to the league campaign,” says Kaizer Chiefs striker Ryan Moon as he looks forward to Saturday’s Absa Premiership clash against AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium. “We’ve put the Nedbank Cup match against Stellenbosch FC behind us because we need to collect all three points when we meet Usuthu.”
The Pietermaritzburg-born attacker has been in good form recently, netting a number of crucial goals for the Glamour Boys. His excellent performances have earned him a call-up to the national team from Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter.
The 21-year-old came on towards the end of last weekend’s Nedbank Cup match which saw Kaizer Chiefs advance to the quarter finals after beating Stellenbosch, 2-1. It was one of few outings in which the talented goal-poacher has failed to score in this season.
Amakhosi last met Usuthu on 22 November 2017 at a wet King Zwelithini Stadium. The game ended goalless. “We have to do a lot better this time because we have the advantage of playing at home. We cannot afford to drop any points at this pivotal stage of the season. We’ll push hard to shut the back door and ensure goals are scored at our opponents’ end of the pitch,” Moon adds.
Kaizer Chiefs lost their last Absa Premiership fixture to rivals Orlando Pirates a fortnight ago. Referring to the derby, Moon says: “We’ve put the Soweto derby setback behind us and the lads are ready and raring to face AmaZulu. Supporters deserve nothing less than a victory from us on Saturday and that will require a concerted effort from the entire team.”
The Mighty Amakhosi host Usuthu at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 17 March. Kick-off is at 18:00. “We have been monitoring AmaZulu, just like we do with all our opponents, and we are confident we have what it takes to prevail,” he concludes. “Three points is what we need from them to ensure that our supporters go home happy we improve our league position.”
Chiefs are lying fifth on the log with 35 points, while AmaZulu occupy 13th position with 27 points. Both teams have played 23 league games.
