The reaction from three Chiefs defenders Cyril Nzama, Patrick Mabedi and Fabian McCarthy was that of sheer disappointment.

While other players made their way to the tunnel with assistant coach Doctor Khumalo trying to urge them on, the three stood with hands to their waists with their heads hanging down, probably contemplating what the outcome might do to their ambitions of lifting the championship.

Chiefs remain top now with five points ahead of close rivals Ajax Cape Town, who will only be in action on Wednesday against Golden Arrows.

The first round league match between Chiefs and Stars ended in a 0-0 stalemate and there was little to suggest a different outcome in the first half.

Chances were few and far between and the match only sparked to life towards the end of the half. Stars compressed the midfield with five players and appeared to cope well with pressure from Chiefs.

Striker David Radebe had a rare chance on 42 minutes but instead of taking the responsibility, he played the ball to Nzama on the right. The Amakhosi defender fired wide from a tight angle.

Young midfield sensation Junior Khanye almost fired life into the game with a blistering long-range shot on 47 minutes from outside the box but Akubike did well to capture the ball.

Stars could have gone up immediately after that when December Chauke won possession against Spencer just on the edge of the left box but the Stars midfielder played the ball through to Sipho Mchabe. But Fernandez did well to tip the low shot to safety.

Stars had their chance too on the stroke of halftime with Morris Chauke testing Amakhosi keeper Rowen Fernandez but the Chiefs keeper did well to punch the ball to safety from a tight angle.

Second half substitute Koketso Mmotong beat the offside trap later in the second half but instead of taking a shot at goal, hoofed the ball back into the box with second half replacement Jabu Mendu averting danger with a calm clearing header.

A last-minute effort by Nzama sparked some temporary excitement but Stars keeper Uche Akubike did well to palm the ball over for a corner.
