The ABSA Stadium in the Diamond city will host this interesting spectacle between two teams whose results in their first three games of the new season have yielded the same outcome.

The Amakhosi have thus far drawn their opening three matches of the new campaign, like wise Ajax Cape Town have also ended their first three games of the 2006 – 2007 season deadlocked with the opposition.

On the opening day Ajax lead the game up until the final minutes when Benoni United stole a point from the game with a goal in the dying moments of the game. Sunday’s game between Chiefs and the Urban Warriors brings The Amakhosi face to face with former coach Muhsin Ertugral, who was the man in the top job with Chiefs from 1999 to the mid way point of the 2002-03 season.

It was at that stage that the club parted ways with the wryly Turkish born coach, during his 3 ½ seasons with Chiefs Ertugral won almost all the Cup competitions on offer the one title that did elude them under his tenure was the league championship.

It was under Ertugral that Chiefs were given a torrid time by the Cape outfit, Ajax Cape Town began competing under that name at the start of the 1999-2000 season and won the first encounter between the two teams at the Johannesburg Stadium in November 1999.

Although Doctor Khumalo did manage to get on the score sheet that evening it was not enough to get Chiefs a point out of the game. The Amakhosi had to wait until the second phase of league games during the 2001-02 season, for their first win against the Capetonians and when them it came it was an emphatic 3-1 victory at the Ellis Park Stadium.

That 2002 victory marked a turn around in fortunes for Chiefs against Ajax and since then Chiefs have held the upper hand over Ajax having defeated them three more times without reply. It has now been close on five years since Ajax last beat Chiefs, which was in October 2001 when they defeated Chiefs 2-1 at Newlands.

During the 2005-06 season the games contested between the two teams in PSL games were very contrasting, where as the first encounter between the teams was a dour goalless draw at the FNB Stadium.

The return game in Newlands was an explosive and entertaining game as it turned out to be one of those games, where jubilation on one end quickly turned to despair in a fast paced and open ended game.

Ajax took an early lead when they quickly counter attacked after a Chiefs attack broke down, The Amakhosi soon hit back to level matters with Cyril Nzama striking the equalizer.

Chiefs took the lead in the second half when Ditheko Mototo ran the length of the field to score his first goal for Chiefs, his joy was short lived as Ajax equalized soon a minute later. The Amakhosi did have the opportunity to win the game late on but were unfortunate not to have gone home with all three points as Kaizer Junior hit the woodwork in injury time.

If most of the previous encounters between these two sides are a precursor of what to expect in Kimberly on Sunday then rest assured those lucky enough to be at the ABSA Stadium will be in for a real treat.

With both teams still seeking their first victory of the new season, expect neither manager to go into the game with a cautious approach as they go in search of that elusive first win. After their heroics against Jomo Cosmos on Wednesday evening, when they over turned a 2-0 deficit to level matters, Chiefs will be the bookmakers favourite to win this one.
