Kaizer Chiefs will be aiming to get their title aspirations back on track when they host Stellenbosch at Orlando Stadium in an Absa Premiership game on Sunday 23 August.
Amakhosi went down 3-1 to Bloemfontein Celtic in their last league encounter and the visitors, while Stellenbosch won their last league game against Cape Town City. As we enter the home stretch of the 2019-20 campaign, the Glamour Boys will be aiming to pick up three crucial points in their title race and stretch their lead at the top of the table.
Chiefs will be aiming to complete a league double over Stellenbosch having won the earlier clash between the sides 4-0 in Cape Town back in November last year. The game saw Samir Nurković grab a brace, with Siyabonga Ngezana and Dumsani Zuma both scoring either side of the Serbian striker’s goals. Amakhosi’s victory over Stellenbosch earlier in the season was their seventh league win in a row. A similar result could to help Chiefs take one step closer to winning their first Chiefs title since 2014-15.
In addition to their league meeting earlier in the season, Amakhosi have met Stellenbosch in two other clashes, which were Nedbank Cup matches in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Chiefs won 3-0 away from home in the round of 32 in 2017, while also walking away 2-1 winners at home in a last 16 Nedbank Cup encounter in 2018.
For the home team, three points will be vital as they look to get to the 55-point mark and hopefully build an eight-point gap ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the table. Victory for Chiefs will see them accumulate 55 points in the league for the first time since the 2014-15 season when they managed to amass 69 points.
There is also history to be made for Amakhosi striker Samir Nurković. He has managed 13 league goals the season. Should he score two more goals, he will reach the magical 15 goal mark for the season and will be the first Chiefs player to score 15 league goals since Knowledge Musona in 2010-11.
Chiefs have also scored 45 league goals this season - the most they have managed in the league since scoring 48 in the entire season in their title winning campaign of 2012-13. Should Chiefs manage to grab 50 league goals for the campaign, it will be the first time they have done so since 2004-05.
While Chiefs’ rivalry with Stellenbosch might be in its infancy, the game outcome will have a lot to do with the way the title race will swing, and a win for Chiefs will put them in good stead for their following game against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs and Stellenbosch will square off on Sunday at 18:00 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. The game will be live on SuperSport 4 and various SABC radio stations.
