Kaizer Chiefs will host Bloemfontein Celtic at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, 14 December (kick-off is at 19:30). “The league is still a long journey,” comments Daniel Cardoso. “The Celtic game will be tough. We are positive and are looking forward to the match.”
The visitors are unbeaten in their last four league encounters, drawing 1-1 on the road to Highlands Park in their recent Absa Premiership fixture. It’s no wonder that Celtic’s management are thinking about appointing interim coach Lehlohonolo Seema to be in charge on a permanent basis.
Amakhosi beat Celtic 4-1 in the Macufe Cup in October, thanks to goals from Edmore Chirambadare, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker (penalty) and Keagan Buchanan.
The two sides have met each other in 57 league matches since the establishment of the NSL in 1985. Chiefs have won 32 of these games compared to only 10 for Celtic, while 15 encounters resulted in a draw.
The Glamour Boys, however, did win 23 of their 29 home league matches against Phunya Sele Sele.
Last season, Chiefs took a total of four points off Celtic, winning 1-0 in Bloemfontein and drawing in the return clash at home.
Chiefs lost their last game 3-1 to Chippa United. “It wasn’t our best,” Cardoso admits, “but we are determined to lift our game on Wednesday. I just ask our supporters to be patient and continue to be behind us. The results will come.”
Cardoso is a versatile player, who has been involved in recent matches, often in different positions, ranging from centre-back, left-back to defensive midfielder.
“I am comfortable in any position,” the 28-year-old explains. “Wherever the coach wants me to play, I will happily oblige. I would love to cement my place in the team.”
Amakhosi have struggled to find the back of the net in recent games, even though good goal scoring opportunities were created. “Scoring goals comes with confidence and we have been working on our confidence during the break.”
