We gave them a goal - Baxter

"Our performance was not good enough," Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter laments after his charges salvaged a point from a match played at a blistering pace against a gutsy Platinum Stars on Tuesday night.

"I was very disappointed with the first half,” continues Baxter. “First of all, we gave them a goal at the start. This was followed by giving them two or three massive chances because of poor passing. We shrunk on the ball. The first half was a waste of time for us."

"In the second half we took back the initiative with the equalizer as a result. We had it where we wanted it, but then we suddenly gave it back to them, losing out on two points.”

Both two goalkeepers were kept busy in the second half. Baxter reacts: "The last 15 minutes was end-to-end, and it could have ended 4-3 to either team."

In the second half, the Amakhosi coach made three substitutions before the hour of play, bringing on Bernard Parker, Mandla Masango and Erick Mathoho for Reneilwe Letsholonyane, George Lebese and Siboniso Gaxa.

Baxter indicated that he rotated Mathoho for Gould because the defender came from a hectic schedule with the South African national team. “Tefu Mashamaite is less easy to rotate as he is a left-footed defender,” notes the coach, “and we don’t really have alternative options.”

"Of course, you know that it is a gamble to make three substitutions at that early stage,” explains Baxter. “However, I was disappointed and we needed to change the picture of the game, which we did. But again, after the 2-2 we gave it back to them due to some horrible passes and poor decision-making. It just was a horrible day at the office. It happens."

"On the other hand, Platinum Stars had a good evening,” concludes Baxter. “They put their noses in front, defended bravely and played smartly."

Despite the disappointment about Tuesday’s result, Chiefs do maintain their unbeaten league run this season and remain on top of the log with 37 points from 15 games.
