In all of that time Thabo has only lost in three of the finals - that been the 1999 BOB Save Super Bowl final to SuperSport United and the 2002 Coca Cola Cup final at the hands of Jomo Cosmos. Most recently Thabo was part of the Chiefs team that were narrowly defeated in the 2004 SAA Supa8 final by SuperSport United.
Saturday’s game will also mark the first time Thabo will play in a cup final against Orlando Pirates. Apart from those three occasions the midfield dynamo has a good record in leaving a cup final with a winners medal and Thabo is confident that come Saturday that will be no different.
Thabo is also of the opinion that Chiefs had a tougher road to the finals eliminating the defending champions first up SuperSport United as well as doing away with PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi finals. When questioned as to whether Chiefs had it tougher in getting to the finals Thabo said, “if you look at the teams we played - they were all ranked higher whether PSL or Mvela teams than the teams Pirates came up against”.
The feeling is that Chiefs have the big match temperament to come through against Pirates. Thabo continues further “throughout the tournament we have played better when written off especially against SuperSport and Sundowns. We have big match players and we have been down this road before”.
At the ripe old age of thirty one Thabo has seen it all and has won every local domestic title on offer with the exception of the ABSA Cup. The veteran man has been making room on his mantle at home for an ABSA Cup winners medal.
