“We have already won the league,” says Kaizer Chiefs striker Matthew Rusike ahead of tonight’s Absa Premiership encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns. “However, we have to stick to our guns until the league is finished. We still have a job to do.”
The striker scored twice in Amakhosi’s last outing against Polokwane City. The match was won 4-1, which meant that Chiefs moved to 63 points and, with it, to an unassailable lead on the top of the league table. The goals were Rusikes’s first league goals this season, although he also netted in the CAF Champions League’s 2-1 win over Township Rollers.
“It has been a long season,” Rusike reflects. “Those goals were the fruits of continuing to work hard at training. For sure, they have been a long time in coming, but I knew that they had to come at some stage. And, of course, it’s accordingly amazing to score two championship winning goals.”
On the clash against the Brazilians, Rusike adds: “Last season, we lost the league title to Sundowns. That was a massive bitter pill to swallow, especially as we lost so many points during our last seven league encounters.”
“On the other hand, we are not talking about revenge. We just go for the three points, as that’s how we approach every game.”
Amakhosi and the Brazilians played earlier this season to a 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium with George Lebese scoring the equaliser.
Chiefs play against Sundowns at Atteridgeville’s Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening (kick-off at 19:30).
