“I think it was a good result, as we hit Stars with three in that heat,” reflects Steve Komphela on Sunday’s 3-0 thrashing of Platinum Stars in a Telkom Knockout Last 16 encounter.
“The players responded well to the hot conditions,” Komphela compliments the team.
The goals were scored by Erick Mathoho, Siphelele Mthembu and George Maluleka.
“Forming a team is like building a house,” Komphela reacts. “We lost the MTN8 final to Ajax Cape Town, but Camaldine Abraw and Edward Manqele showed us something after coming on. They added the bricks needed to further improve the house. We are strengthening the team in different positions.”
Komphela is credited with assembling a strong bench. “It is always nice to see a strong bench. We need a strong eleven in the field, seven strong players on the bench and we also need strong players sitting in the stands, who will be pushing the others.”
The legendary former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker remarked after the Platinum Stars win that he hadn’t seen Chiefs playing such good football as they do now for a while.
Komphela smiles upon hearing Barker’s comments. Remaining humble, the Amakhosi coach reacts: “We are creating a structure with tactical discipline in the team. However, within this, the players are free and flowing in their approach.”
