“We are delighted with the three points, even though it maybe wasn’t our best performance,” reflected Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela on the 2-1 win over Bidvest Wits, before adding with a smile on his face: “Maybe we should come more to the Cape.”

It was Chiefs’ first Absa Premiership match played at home away from home in the Cape of Love & Peace this season. The goals were scored by Willard Katsande (from the penalty spot) and Lorenzo Gordinho, who was selected as the Man of the Match after an outstanding performance.

“Wits really tried to make it difficult for us,” added Komphela, “we had to grind it out.”

Thanks to the win, Chiefs have closed the gap to log leaders Wits from eight to five points (with both team having played 12 matches).

“There is still a long way to go,” the Amakhosi coach pointed out, “although we have gotten closer to the top of the log. However, in the end, we can only be happy if we win the Absa Premiership trophy after the full 30 games have been played.”

On a question about Gordinho’s performance, Komphela commented: “After the game he came to me, saying: ‘Thank you for believing in me.’ He can only get better, especially when getting guided by somebody with the experience of Morgan Gould, who is back to full fitness after having had to endure a long road to full recovery.”

The 32-year-old defender tore his Achilles tendon during the CAF Champions League clash against Raja Casablanca early this year. Gould made his comeback in Wednesday’s Telkom Knockout final.
