“We want to be in the semifinals,” stresses Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho ahead of Amakhosi’s Telkom Knockout quarterfinal clash against Mpumalanga Black Aces at Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium tonight (kick-off is at 18:00).
The lanky centre-back scored the opening goal in the first round of the Telkom Knockout, helping Kaizer Chiefs demolish Platinum Stars 3-0.
“People read much into our drawn league matches,” states Mathoho, talking about the numerous draws in the Absa Premiership this season. “We discuss this as players… We know that things will turn around in our favour soon.”
Chiefs have so far won 13 League Cup titles (three of them during the Telkom Knockout era). The last victory was in 2011. Aces, meanwhile, haven’t won the trophy as yet.
Historically, in eight cup ties between the two sides, Amakhosi have claimed six wins and netted 16 times, while AmaZayoni booked one win, scoring three goals. Even the one draw was eventually won on penalties by the Glamour Boys.
“The mood in the camp is excellent,” concludes Mathoho. “We are well prepared.”
The team will be minus Daniel Cardoso, David Zulu and Siyanda Xulu, who are all nursing injuries.
Ovidy Karuru, Philani Cele, Andisiwe Mtsile, Sibongiseni Ngcobo and Brilliant Khuzwayo were not included in the squad to travel to Nelspruit. Instead, they have joined Kaizer Chiefs Reserves that will play in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge festival in Bloemfontein tomorrow.
Tickets for the Telkom Knockout match are selling fast. The tickets are available at Computicket at a cost of R50.
