“I feel great, because we had a fantastic pre-season,” expresses Kaizer Chiefs’ left-back Tsepo Masilela. “We played a couple of friendlies. We can’t say we are 100% in terms of game sharpness, but we are looking good - the team spirit is at an all-time high.”
Amakhosi will be visiting last season Absa Premiership runners-up Bidvest Wits in the opening fixture of the season on Tuesday (kick-off is at 19:30). The match is taking place at the 5 000 seater Bidvest Stadium.
“Wits finished second and their coach, Gavin Hunt, has won many trophies before,” comments Masilela. “They have quality players. We are aware this is the opener and everyone wants to start on a high. The positive is that we are ready. Everyone goes in the opener with the aim to start strong. We want to have a good run from the word go.”
Masilela and his teammates completed the pre-match training on Monday afternoon.
“We don’t want to play catch up,” adds Amakhosi’s left-back. “We want to be in the thick of things from the start. We have learnt our lessons and this time we are geared to have a good run from the start.”
Coach Steve Khompela confirmed that Erick Mathoho and Keagan Buchanan will miss this opener whilst a late decision will be made on Siphiwe Tshabalala, who has been back in full training after having missed most of pre-season due to injury.
Last season saw Chiefs overcoming the stubborn Wits home and away. Away at Bidvest Stadium, George Maluleka’ free kick separated the two teams, while in Cape Town’s Home away from Home match, the Amakhosi beat Wits by a 2-1 score line. Lorenzo Gordinho settled the match after Daine Klate had levelled out Willard Katsande’s spot kick.
The 2016/17 PSL starts today, on Tuesday, 23 August 2016.
