“We will be on top of the log by Christmas,” vows Daniel Cardoso ahead of tonight’s Absa Premiership match against Chippa United. “We are not far from the top of the log.”
Kaizer Chiefs face Chippa on the road in Port Elizabeth at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 3 December (kick-off is at 18:00).
Referring to the preparations, Cardoso comments, “We had a bit of rest and an opportunity to reflect on our last match against Cape Town City.”
“There were lots of positives to be taken from that game, despite the one-all draw,” Cardoso explains. “We were down to ten men early in the game, but we were able to contain them to keep one point.” Sibusiso Khumalo was sent off halfway the first half.
Cardoso, however, does lament the lack of goals, “But we are getting there. We take collective responsibility for the missed opportunities and we are sure that this will pass and that we will get back to our winning ways very soon.”
The versatile player, who can play either in defence or in midfield, has seen some action in recent times. Cardoso is happy with the turn of events, given his long lay-off last season due to injury.
“I’m glad to be in the mix,” reacts the soft-spoken 28-year-old. “It has been a hard nut to crack to get into the starting line-up. We have so much quality in the team and everyone is fighting to start.”
He confirms the warm reception the team gave to the newly signed Joseph 'Tight' Molangoane. The PSL gave Molangoane his clearance to join Amakhosi from Chippa. “Tight will have a big influence on the team,” Cardoso mentions. “We welcome him and wish him all of the best. He is a good player.”
Molangoane is expected to play some role tonight against his former team.
Meanwhile, William Twala is still out due to injury, while Erick Mathoho is a doubtful starter. Sibusiso Khumalo is serving a two-game suspension.
Chippa collected four points from Chiefs during last season’s campaign. The first round game played in Port Elizabeth ended in a goalless draw, while Chippa eclipsed Chiefs 2-0 at FNB Stadium.
