Chairman Kaizer Motaung has congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns for their continental triumph.

“On behalf of the Amakhosi Family, I wish to congratulate Masandawana for winning the CAF Champions League,” said Motaung. “The accolades must go to the entire team, Coach Pitso Mosimane and his Technical Staff, for their gallant performance. I will be amiss if I do not make a special mention of Mr Patrice Motsepe for the leadership and investment he is contributing to the development of soccer in South Africa.”

The Champions League is the main club competition which comes with the Star. Sundowns were crowned CAF Champions League champions after beating the fancied and experienced Zamalek of Egypt 3-1 on aggregate. The Brazilians have now become the second South African side to win the Champions League after Orlando Pirates conquered the continent in 1995. This is South Africa's third Gold Medal in the CAF competitions. The Amakhosi have won the CAF's Cup Winners Cup in 2001 coached by Muhsin Ertugral.

“South Africa can only benefit from this glory,” added Motaung. “I wish every South African a celebratory moment in appreciation of this development.”
