“We played and created opportunities but unfortunately we didn’t score,” reflected Ernst Middendorp. “There were numerous goal scoring possibilities that we could have utilised. I thought we could have gone to the break at least 2-0 up.”

Middendorp watched his team agonisingly coming close to collecting maximum points from a resistant SuperSport United.

“We kept our shape and defended very well,” said Middendorp, “Erick Mathoho got injured in the first half after a brutal foul play. He soldiered on but in the second half he struggled. Our attack was well orchestrated with much vigour going forward. I’m glad Samir Nurković scored his first goal for us.”

‘Tower’, as Mathoho is affectionately known, was subsequently substituted by Lorenzo Gordinho.

“We do not have much time before our next match,” referred Middendorp to their upcoming trip to the Mother City. Chiefs play Cape Town City on Tuesday. “We will receive medical advice on ‘Tower’ and make the decision.

“We will soon introduce James Kotei,” commented Middendorp on the awaited debut of the Ghanaian. “He’s working hard and gaining his freshness after experiencing some fatigue at the end of the Tanzanian League. Kudos to Daniel Akpeyi for saving a last-minute penalty. He did well to save the penalty. We will take this draw.”

Two key players Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat were back in the team for the first time this season. Khune sat on the bench after eight months’ absence.

“It is good to have Itumeleng Khune back. This is a healthy situation. Khune is waiting for 1 or 2 matches to be match fit. I’m happy though with his fitness and training.

“We are looking forward to another fierce match in Cape Town. We will recover on Sunday and travel on Monday, he concluded.

Chiefs visit Cape Town City on Tuesday night. The match takes place at the Newlands Stadium. Kick-off is 19:30.
