“The match against SuperSport United will play a role in deciding who will be in the running for top league positions,” coach Ernst Middendorp said after the pre-match training session on Thursday afternoon. “It promises to be a tough fixture against an opponent that’s on a good run.”
Kaizer Chiefs will face SuperSport United on the road at Mbombela Stadium tonight in a much-anticipated Absa Premiership encounter. Kick-off is at 20:00.
Three points separate the two teams going into the clash. Amakhosi are in seventh position with 35 points from 23 games, while Matsatsantsa occupy fifth place with 38 points.
“Njabulo Blom has been included in the travelling squad,” Middendorp pointed out. The young defender was recently promoted from the reserve team. “I’ve noticed a positive change in his game and persona, which is good. He’s showing signs of being ready to make his first team debut.”
Middendorp didn’t reveal any role that Blom might play in tonight’s clash. “We have all the positions covered despite the injury list and we will field a strong team to do the job.”
The German coach also gave an injury update. “We will probably have a few of the guys back before the end of the season. Mulomowandau Mathoho is back on the training pitch, although he will only start doing full training in about four weeks.”
The lanky defender is sidelined with an ankle injury.
Lebogang Manyama has entered the final phase of his rehabilitation and will resume full training in two to three weeks’ time. The midfielder is recovering from a knee injury.
Happy Mashiane is doing gym work and will start full training in about three weeks. The talented left-back is on the mend from a broken toe.
Itumeleng Khune is still working out in the gym, but he has also started running on the field. The skipper is out for the season with a shoulder injury.
“SuperSport United have a good squad, but we are here to perform and do what we need to do,” Middendorp concluded. “I’m satisfied with our preparations. We just need to walk on the pitch and do what we have practiced during the week.”
